It is with sadness that I share this message from Jane Robillard of the Rotary Club of Flin Flon, MB. We did not receive the news early enough to put it in our December newsletter.

Jane reports that on November 4th, Rotarian Catherine Hynes passed away. This was followed by the loss of fellow Rotarian George Barabonoff on November 17, 2012.

Catherine HynesCatherine Hynes was 56 when she was taken by cancer. She worked for the Community Health Assessment Network (CHAN) of Manitoba, known locally as “Norman Regional Health”. Cathy sat on numerous boards in Flin Flon. She is remembered fondly as the inspirational leader of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life in Flin Flon. In 2011, she and a dedicated group of volunteers rallied the people of Flin Flon to join the fight against cancer. In all, 28 teams with 258 participants Relayed in support of Manitobans on a cancer journey. In 2012 she was awarded with the Flin Flon Woman of the Year honour.

George BarabonoffGeorge Barabonoff was 74 when he passed away. George spent much of his life in Baker’s Narrows on Yoho Bay. Friends remember him for his love of dogs and as an ambassador for the SPCA, especially on annual tag days. He also gained quite a reputation for his famous Flin Flon baked beans and wild rice.
